Saturn Aura, a Must See Vehicle

Sunday, August 24th, 2008
camry
Anthony Fontanelle asked:

General Motors, in the past, has developed Saturn vehicles with no output from its other subsidiaries or division. The result of this is the low sale for the Saturn brand. In the past, the only good thing about Saturn is that it has the best customer relationship. With its hassle-free sales, what you see on the sticker is what you will pay for. Recently General Motors decided to revitalize Saturn’s lineup.

To do this, the Detroit, Michigan based car manufacturer turned to its subsidiary based in Europe - Opel. The collaboration between Saturn and Opel has led to the development and production of the new Saturn Aura - a must see vehicle for prospective car buyers.

One of the strong selling points of the Saturn Aura is its reasonable price. According to General Motors, the Aura will be sold starting with a price of $19,985. The most that one should shell out for the new Aura is $23,945. For that sum, one would be treated to a long list of features that complements the European exterior styling of the new Aura.

While the Aura has what it takes to take on the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, the sale of the Saturn is not as high as General Motors would want it. The reason for this is the previous ad campaign used by General Motors which failed to attract the attention of many American car buyers. To change that scenario, General Motors has announced that they will be offering Camry and Accord units in Saturn dealerships to be test driven by car buyers along with the Saturn Aura.

The brand is capitalizing on the fact that the Aura beat both the Camry and the Accord for the North American Car of the Year Award. Earlier this year, the Aura was given that distinction at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Another strong selling point for the Saturn Aura is its projected residual value after three years of 51 percent. That figure is almost the same with the Camry. This means that the value of the Aura is almost the same as that of the Camry. This shows that General Motors is finally closing the gap between them and Asian car manufacturers in terms of the quality of the cars that they produce.

The Aura is available in the XE and XR trim levels as well as the hybrid version called the Aura Green Line. General Motors announced that a wagon version of the Aura will be introduced in 2009 as a 2010 model year vehicle. The said wagon version will use the G Epsilon platform and is being developed by Opel.

The Saturn Aura is based on the Opel Vectra. The European styling of the Vectra is very much apparent in the Aura. From its front fascia to the Saturn fenders, the body panels and the rear bumper, the Aura sports European styling which earned it the praise of being “the best Saturn yet.”

As far as performance is concerned, the engine of the XE trim line is a 3.5-liter V6 engine with a power output of 224 hp. This is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. For the top-of-the-line XR model, the powerplant choice is a slightly larger 3.6-liter V6. This engine can produce as much as 252 horsepower. It is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Plans a $413m Upgrade to Kentucky Plant

Friday, August 22nd, 2008
camry
Lauren Woods asked:

The Toyota Motor Corp. is planning a $413 million upgrade to its Georgetown, Kentucky plant. The plan is intended to boost the production capacity and efficiency. The automaker also plans to add a model to the Camry, Avalon and Solara vehicles in said the plant.

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority gave preliminary approval for $25 million in economic incentives for the work. Toyota has about 7,000 employees at the Georgetown factory, but spokesman Rick Hesterberg said the upgrades would not result in any new jobs. Hesterberg added that the money would be invested in the assembly and production areas. He declined to discuss the new vehicle being considered for the plant.

Catherine Madden, a senior automotive analyst for market-research firm Global Insight near Boston, said that she expects the new vehicle will be a midsized sport-touring wagon which is quite similar to the Matrix but larger. Madden added the plant would be a logical choice for the new model because the frame would be based on the Toyota Camry. She said about 80,000 of the vehicles would be made each year.

Some of the Toyota Camry production at Georgetown could be shifted to a plant in Lafayette, Indiana, to free up room, Madden added. “This is the beauty of what the Toyota system is supposed to do,” she said of Toyota’s ability to shift work between plants and produce manifold models based on the same welding points and architecture.

The automaker, known for its refined auto parts which could be compared to the quality of APC cold air intake, has invested $5.5 billion in its Georgetown plant. It expected to produce about 352,000 Camrys, 93,000 Avalons and 48,000 Solaras in Georgetown in the previous year. The target came along with approximately 500,000 six-cylinder and four-cylinder engines.

Madden noted a possible name for the new wagon is the Ace. That name is being used for a vehicle sold in Japan, but she said the American wagon would be completely different. Hesterberg said that Toyota does not comment on details of upcoming models. He added, “A final decision about the new vehicle has not been made and Georgetown is not the only location in the running.”

Under the company’s agreement with the state, employment at the Georgetown plant could actually decrease to 6,750 in 2008-09, then to 6,466 in 2010-2013 and to 6,253 in 2014-17. Hesterberg said those guidelines reflect the minimum number of jobs the plant must have to receive state incentives, and he said there are no plans to reduce the size of the work force. Almost 1,000 temporary workers are employed at the plant through a staffing agency.

Gene Fuqua, the acting secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, said that the program has only been used a few times. “We don’t get $400 million investments very often,” he said in an interview. “No question, there’s a lot of spinoff from this.”

The proposed tax breaks fall under the Kentucky Reinvestment Act. The latter offers incentives to companies with at least 1,000 employees that make significant upgrades even if they are not adding jobs. A copy of the agreement between the state and Toyota stated that the work is estimated to be completed in late 2008.

Toyota’s Reliability Takes a Hit

Sunday, August 17th, 2008
camry
Anthony Fontanelle asked:

When it comes to car buying, a lot of people consider the different attributes of a vehicle. Others are looking for a new vehicle with good performance while others put more value on comfort. Some buyers are after the exterior design of a vehicle while some are looking for vehicles loaded with features. There are also those whose choice of vehicle depends on its safety. But one thing that all consider is a vehicle’s reliability. And when it comes to reliability issues, Toyota is tops - that is, until this year.

Consumer Reports recently reported that Toyota’s vehicles’ reliability has declined. This comes after years of the Japanese automaker’s leadership in the industry when it comes to reliability. The Consumer Reports 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey shows that consumers are now finding Toyota vehicles less reliable than their ancestors. In contrast, Ford’s vehicles have received good marks from consumers.

The most popular Toyota nameplate, the V6 variant of the Camry received a dismal and surprising below average rating in terms of predicted reliability. The Camry has been redesigned fore 2007 and it has always been Toyota’s best selling vehicle. It has been known through the years as a reliable car. The redesign though may have had negative effects on the reliability of the car.

Aside from the 2007 Camry, the redesigned and beefed-up Toyota Tundra also received a below average rating in reliability. The four-wheel drive V8 version of the full-size pickup truck received the dismal rating. Even Lexus’ all-wheel drive variant of the GS sedan received a below average rating. Since Consumer Reports does not recommend any vehicle with a below average rating, the three variants are no longer on the prestigious “Recommended list” of Consumer Reports.

Although reliability of aforementioned variants dropped below average, the automaker in general is still third in the overall reliability ranking. That includes Toyota’s luxury division Lexus and its youth brand Scion. The Japanese automaker ranked below fellow Japanese automakers. Honda is ranked as the producer of the most reliable automobiles. Subaru, the makers of the durable Subaru ignition coil, spark plugs, and spark plug wires is ranked second.

Toyota Motor Sales Executive Vice President Jim Lentz had this to say in response to the Consumer Reports announcement: “Over all, this survey reflects well on our products. However, we’re taking measures every day to continue to sharpen quality and enhance customer satisfaction.” Being on track to become the largest automaker in the world, Toyota has been stepping up its production output. It is only normal for automakers to have problems with quality control after a huge boost in production. Thus Toyota is expected to bounce back from this minor stumble.

In the past, redesigned Toyota vehicles have been recommended by Consumer Reports due to the automaker’s track record. The Auto Channel reported that even if Consumer Reports have insufficient reliability data for a new vehicle, it still recommends redesigned Toyota, Lexus, and Scion nameplates due to the aforementioned reason. But with the amount of Toyota recalls this year, Consumer Reports gave the redesigned Toyota vehicles below average reliability scores. If Toyota can bounce back to its trademark stance in terms of reliability, Consumer Reports may bring back its policy to recommend the automaker’s newly redesigned vehicles.
